About Our Staff
Welcome to Forest Edge Playhouse, our licensed home daycare and preschool in Reston, VA. I’m the owner and lead teacher and I have 20 years of experience in providing quality child care and early childhood education. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Master’s Degree in Psychology. Before opening my daycare in 2006, I worked as a teacher in different countries. I really love working with children, and this made me decide to open my own daycare! My staff and I are CPR and First-aid certified, as well as MAT trained so we can administer medication to all children in our care. We are a team of moms, and like all parents, we want what’s best for your precious little one! We strive to create a nurturing, happy and safe environment where every child can learn and grow, and develop their full potential.
Philosophy & Curriculum
We believe that each child is unique, so we provide individualized attention and tailor daily activities to their needs and abilities. Daily activities help develop fine motor skills (e.g. puzzles, writing or coloring), gross motor skills (e.g.large block building or outdoor exercise), manners and hygiene (e.g. washing hands and proper greeting) and of course, socio-emotional skills with free play! We know that children learn best through play and fun, engaging experiences which is why we allow them to explore new things and have fun while learning. Forest Edge Playhouse follows the Play-based learning principles – an effective approach to develop each child’s valuable skills. Our place has lots of educational and fun activities in store for them such as circle time, rhymes, yoga, reading, writing, numbers, letters, shapes, and much more! We have a school readiness program and teach our students according to their abilities. We also teach the children until 2nd-grade level, so they are ahead of the class when they get to Kindergarten. We create a specific, dedicated binder for each child with a unique curriculum plan that we develop, based on each child's learning level and style. We teach children advanced lessons, and we ensure that they are prepared to enter school. We are enrolled in Fairfax Library's Early Literacy Program. A county officer visits our facility half an hour once a month to read a storybook, sing a song and play games. She also gives each child a book, coloring sheet and some references for other books. Teachers encourage each child to speak English, but we can also expose them to foreign languages upon request (we speak Spanish, Arabic, Punjabi, Urdu, and Hindi). We also teach them the American Sign Language.
Our Program
Our child care and preschool program is open year-round from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. We provide full-time and part-time care for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers between the age of 1 week and 5 years old, including children with special needs. We serve morning and evening snacks and provide milk and juice to all kids attending our program (all these are already included in the tuition). We have a backyard playground and we are also close to the community playground where we spend our outdoor play-time every day. We have a yearly picnic, Christmas party, Sports Day, Halloween and other small fun parties. In the summer, we bring out the pool and do water play. We have an open door policy, so parents can come and visit anytime and see what their child is doing (once they enroll in our program, we give them the door code). We also give parents a daily form to give you an update of your child's day (their activity schedule, what they had for lunch, etc.)
Safety
We always practice healthy habits to make sure kids are healthy and safe at all times. We clean and sanitize tables and high chairs between activities and we regularly wash our hands.
Location
Forest Edge Playhouse is within walking distance from Forest Edge Elementary School and close to Reston Metro Station. We’ve sent our daughter here for about a year and a half, since she was 3 months old. We couldn’t be happier. She is a wonderful lady who clearly cares very much for the children. We feel very fortunate to have found her. Our daughter loves it. It’s an in home daycare, so the facilities are not the same as at a large center, but they meet the needs well. The back door leads to a small fenced in play area, and there’s a larger tot lot behind the house that they go to very frequently.

We really love this daycare. We have been in other daycares in the area, and this provider is noticeably more loving and caring than others. She genuinely cares about our son and family. She puts so much effort into the kids learning and having fun. We just love it here! I would recommend it to anyone.

This childcare is probably the best decision we’ve taken for our son. We have known this provider for over a decade now, and she’s an extension to our family. My son initially, as most children, went through a period of adjustment at daycare, but quickly grew to love this place. He absolutely adores this provider and her staff, and often doesn't want to come back home during pick up. This daycare is abt a 20-30 mins drive for us, but we wouldn't change it for the world and it is absolutely worth the additional time. This provider is trained specialist in the field and children are just naturally drawn to her. I would strongly encourage anyone looking for childcare services to consider this childcare as you can be assured of peace of mind to know that your child is in trusted, well-trained, experienced, and nurturing hands. Thank you for all that you do!

I enrolled my daughter (about 7 months old at the time) here as a small trial and then full-time from January. I love everything about Forest Edge. The provider and all the caretakers are attentive and loving. Leela is now going to turn 15 months old and is a confident, bright girl who has developed good social, motor, and emotional skills far beyond children her age. Since she joined the daycare, she's taken an interest in the outdoors, exploration, reading (the library hosts reading hours here) and I am so happy with everything. The provider and her team are very open and have a kind of both-of-us-together care model where she talks to the parents individually about their child and their wellbeing and growth. I feel like Leela may be at daycare but I don't miss out on her big moments at all :)

This daycare has been a wonderful experience for my girls. The very first week my daughter attended, they already got her going to the potty which is amazing! They provide excellent care and education. I know my girls are in good hands.

We moved to the area with little advanced notice, and had to find childcare fast! I was a bit nervous about putting our 11 month old daughter in an in-home daycare with no personal references, but we couldn’t be happier with our experience the past two-and-a-half months. By the second day, she was going to the teachers without crying - something we never achieved at her previous daycare when we dropped her off. She is clearly very happy and comfortable there with all the teachers and peers. The teachers have been working with her to learn many new skills, and due to their efforts to teach all the kids good manners and behavior, she has not picked up any negative behaviors from the other children. It is clear the teachers and other children love our daughter, and they create a family-like atmosphere at this small daycare. I now realize that an in-home daycare offers many benefits not found at a larger center. The parents all know one another and the other children. As an added benefit, our daughter hasn’t really been sick since being in the daycare; in a larger center, she seemed to have a runny nose fairly consistently. Being surrounded by children of all different ages (she’s the youngest) has helped advance her language development very quickly as well. And she gets so much personalized attention from the teachers, who also communicate well with us as her parents. Not knowing anyone in the area when we moved here, this little daycare has really started to feel like a family to us. I highly recommend it!

This provider is a very attentive, caring and loving caregiver or teacher which every kid needs. My son was in her care for almost 4 years. She went above and beyond to teach new things to all the kids (especially reading at an early age) and we would be forever grateful to her for that. There is well balanced free play, story time, reading time and arts & crafts for all ages. I would highly recommend this provider and her day care to all the parents.

We were very concerned with the development of our child and with the great reviews on this place we started sending our kid here, Not even a single day we don't talk about what a best decision we made , we saw a huge difference in personal development . I would strongly recommend this provider and how professional she is. My Kid loves to wake up happy and not even a single day he doesn't want to go here.

My son is going here for 3 years; we have moved out of area now, but not changing the daycare despite our 40 minutes increased commute. In addition to below, what stands out for us is our child's knowledge and learning skills are exponentially growing under this provider. He goes in happy and does not want to return home. Everybody is friendly and well-spoken at the daycare. My son is patiently handled and considered very polite, clean, well mannered and disciplined by our friends and family (and so are the other kids at the daycare). Our smallest of requests has been heartfully accommodated - we have limited food choices and they are always honored. Kids of all ages give an exposure to my son and are like best friends ! Highly recommended.

My daughter attended this place from the time she was 6 months to 5 years old. Under this provider's care my daughter rarely fell ill, she was always learning new things and there were lots of fun activities throughout the year. My daughter even learnt basics of reading and math giving her a smooth transition into kindergarten. This place has a safe, clean and friendly environment and I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking good child care.

I honestly could not speak highly enough about this Childcare and the amazing job that this provider and the teaching staff do. We have been with the center for 4.5 years; our oldest started at 3 months old and our youngest started at 6 months old. Our children have had the most incredible experience here, where they constantly learn and steadily grow. Our daughter will be more than ready to start kindergarten, as she is already reading thanks to this provider's structured curriculum. This provider truly creates a community, where all the parents know one another and all of the children. There has never been a time in the past 4.5 years where I thought my kids would benefit more from a different center. The children are clearly loved by the entire staff, and they show love in return for their teachers. We have been so blessed to have this amazing childcare center for our children.

The provider and her staff are excellent. Both my children attended from ages 4 months to 5 years old. She provides a loving and safe environment for the children, as well as a strong curriculum that is age appropriate at every level. Both my children left her care reading proficiently and with a good base knowledge of math. Hours and location are very convenient in Reston.

Choosing to send our children to this daycare has been one of our best childcare decisions. When we were expecting our second one, there was no doubt in our minds about where we were sending her. This daycare is well run, clean and provides a warm, safe place where we know our kids are loved, cared for and are learning and growing while having fun at the same time. We drop off our kids each morning with the peace of mind that we’re handing them off to a second set of parents. This provider has a background in education and is therefore able to lay a solid foundation for the kids around fundamental concepts such as multiplication, time, money etc. Going into kindergarten, her kids are well prepared and confident. I would highly recommend this daycare. It has been one of the best decisions for our family.

This Day Care has been extremely great to my family. I’ve known the owner/provider for about 10 years. She is very professional, loving, caring and critical to the early educational foundation of our children. My son who is now 10 attended the daycare when he was 1 and stayed until he was ready for Kindergarten. Currently, my daughter who is 3 attends and the owner and her staff have all been critical to my children’s growth and development. I love that it’s structured with a daily schedule and accelerated curriculum that puts them ahead of most kindergarteners and a clean, safe and loving environment for our children. The owner was an elementary school teacher in previous years and has transitioned that same structure and curriculum into her daycare. She cares about our children deeply. She encourage parents to bring children early to get the full valuable of the day. My daughter always wants to stay longer at pick up time which is a great sign. The owner is very thorough and organized ... she sends home weekly folders that contains all work completed that week which helps to stay aligned with the learning at home. She celebrates various holidays and allow the kids to create precious crafts that goes along with the holidays. She takes time to also celebrate birthdays and have show and tell which encourages the children not only to share but to feel comfortable speaking in public and with friends about the items that are important to the kids. I highly recommend this Day Care. They cared for 2 of my children and if I’m blesssd with a 3rd I will not hesitate to send him/her there. Thanks for all that you do! ~Shay Herring

This daycare has been a lifesaver for our family. We started at a popular daycare center but pulled our daughter out when she was six months old. We felt that she wasn’t getting the type of personal attention we expected and fortunately found here. Since then this home daycare has been amazing. Not only do they help her hit developmental milestones with ease, they help to bring out her full potential with positive reinforcement. Because we love the daycare so much we immediately enrolled our second child in the daycare as well. My daughter just turned 4 and is already reading, writing, and confidently completing problem solving and patterns. She’s definitely surpassed the kindergarten curriculum and I attribute that mostly to this daycare. My original plan was to put my daughter into a formal preschool by age 4, but after seeing the results here we have been extremely impressed with her progress. My children feel safe, loved, and confident and love showing up everyday. It’s the best decision we’ve made for our children.

Be very cautious before putting your LO in this home day care. We did a mistake and realized it soon. When we visited first time, the care provider assured us that she would take personal care of our 11 months old. She assured that she would not enforce their daily routine and would mould her slowly. On first day we had put our LO for just one hour and for full day on second and third day. The very second day, she asked me that how would our LO sleep at 1.00pm as she took her short nap between 10am-10.45am, she will cry and other kids will be disturbed. I requested her to take my LO in other room if she doesn’t sleep and if other kids are sleeping. She refused to do that and said that all the caretakers take their lunch at that time and some rest. How can they think that 11 months old will get into their routine in just one day? Those made us realize that how less they care about babies and their needs. The baby crib mattress was very thin just around 1-2 inches. When I asked her for thick mattress, she explained that it came with crib and they are not going to replace it. We did not like either the mattress or the response and the way she responded. We knew that the mattress was uncomfortable. We even repented that we did not notice it during our first visit. Same day I visited in afternoon to check, my LO was sleeping with her bib. They did not even care to take that off while she was sleeping. They explained that my daughter drools. My daughter did not ever drool but she might have because of crying too much. Third day in the evening when we went to pick her up, she had food all over her face & hand. She had her snack at 3:30 according to their daily chart and we picked her up at 4:40. That means our daughter was like that for almost an hour. Both I and my husband were in huge pain to see her like that. In evening, we also realized that her voice was changed. We are sure it must be because of her constant screaming. We do not think that anyone harmed her but we were very sure that nobody cared enough to soothe her or calm her. We immediately decided to take our daughter off the care. To top all this, caregiver did not show slight touch of humanity. She kept money for whole week along with registration fee which we felt was reasonable. But she did not return full deposit as well. We did not care and happily agreed. Other points to note – She keeps just one assistant in the evening along with her for 12 kids. She allows other young girls in the kids area. This should not be allowed in a professional home day care.
Response from the provider:
Yes please be cautious to put your LO in any day care. When new child comes to any daycare it’s a new atmosphere and new faces for him/her. It takes time for them, to get comfortable in the new atmosphere. They all cry in the beginning but slowly they become friendly & feel happy. Their daughter came only 3 days for 3-4 hours everyday. She came around lunchtime. That time we 3 teachers have to feed all the 12 children. We have to give time to all the children equally. Soon after the lunch they all take nap 1:00-3:00pm. If new child comes at that time & takes nap @ home & will take nap around 2:30 then she/he cannot mix with other children since their naptime will be different. Putting new child in other room: Both the rooms are very close to each other. If anyone cries in one room you can hear them in other room too. It’s disturbs other kids’ nap & it’s not fair for them. That’s the reason we recommend all the parents to come early between 7:30- 9:00am. So they can participate & enjoy all the morning activities. We do lot of hands on activities & indoor and outdoor play. All the kids love that and get tired and fall into the daily routine easily. Mattress: I have folding cribs & mattresses approved by licensing department of VA. I already checked in the market for thick mattress for that size cribs. It is not available anywhere. I even bought one more mattress to double the size of the mattresses. But supervisor from the in licensing office said “You can’t use 2 mattresses on one crib because it’s not safe for child.” When she was crying and not eating the food. I was trying to feed her again and again. We keep all the children very clean. One Assistant in the evening: According to licensing department daycare provider needs one assistant up to 32 points & I have less than that points Still I keep one extra assistant in the morning because I want to take good care of the children. Evening kids start leaving from 4:30 so number of children becomes slowly less also. We don’t need 3 teachers in the evening. Deposit: I always send the parent handbook to all my parents once they register in my daycare. I tell them clearly all the rules before they start. I have two weeks notice period & I use the deposit money that time. They didn’t give me any notice. Still I did a favor for them & returned one weeks deposit to them. All my current or previous kids parents are very happy. Any one can ask any of them with any query. Thank you & have a wonderful day.
