Welcome to Shaw Little Kids Playhouse, our licensed daycare and preschool located in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, DC. Our child care facility is located near Logan Circle and the Shaw-Howard Univ Station, off Rhode Island Ave NW.

Program information

At Shaw Little Kids Playhouse, we offer various child care options to meet the needs of busy parents. Our daycare operates from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday, offering full-time care. We care for children aged 3 months to 5 years old, and include a more structured preschool curriculum to prepare your little ones for kindergarten.

We provide lunch and snacks, in a peanut-free and tree-nut-free environment to accommodate children with allergies. Please inquire about specific accommodations to ensure we can meet your family's needs.

About The Staff

I'm the owner, director and lead teacher of this in-home child care and preschool program. I have 7 years of early education experience and certifications in CPR and First Aid. My 2 assistants have over 5 years of experience and together, we are committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and enriching environment for your children! My journey in child care and education began at the Briya School and Training Center, where I worked as an assistant before realizing my dream of opening my own daycare in 2018.

I simply love children and truly enjoy to see them grow, learn, and develop into confident individuals. I believe in building strong relationships with both children and their families, ensuring that every child feels valued and supported in their learning journey. I am fluent in both Amharic and English, and my child care assistants are native Spanish speakers, so we can also teach the Spanish language to your child, if you'd like.

Curriculum & Activities

At Shaw Little Kids Playhouse, we believe in the power of play as a fundamental tool for learning. Our curriculum is play-based, incorporating the Creative Curriculum to foster curiosity and development in our young learners. Here’s a glimpse into the activities your child will enjoy:

Color & Sensory Activities: Encouraging fine motor skills and sensory exploration.
Building Kits & Puzzles: Promoting problem-solving abilities and cognitive development.
Water Play & Sand Box: Engaging in tactile experiences that are both fun and educational.
Painting & Scribbling: Fostering creativity and self-expression through arts and crafts.
Circle Time: A group activity where we discuss the calendar, weather, body parts, etc. fostering social skills and routine.
Indoor & Outdoor Playtime: Ensuring physical development and social interaction through various play activities.

We love having our son at this daycare! He has been there since 6 months and is always happy when we pick him up. The staff are very kind and attentive and always share how his day went. He has 2 fresh meals provided to him daily which is so helpful and we always feel that he is well cared for during the day. The daycare organizes lovely celebrations for each child’s birthday and for holidays!

We have been very happy with the daycare! Our child is happy when we drop off and pick up. The team is friendly and clearly cares about the children. The staff members are helpful partners in navigating our child’s milestones. It’s a bonus that the children interact across age groups.

We’ve had a wonderful experience with the owner and her staff since starting to send our son a few months ago. They provide loving, high-quality care in a safe and welcoming environment. This family child care was the perfect fit for our family. They are kind, caring, and exceptional people who cared for our daughter as their own. This caregiver and her daycare family are absolutely fabulous! We were a bit nervous to drop off our 6-month old (in that new parent way), but from the minute we walked in, she and the other caregivers made us feel so comfortable and confident. Our son quickly grew to love her and the time he spent there and he would eagerly go play when he arrived. They provided nutritious food and loved to take the kids outside to explore. More than the excellent care that we received, we felt like we were part of the family and we were so sad when we moved away. I would highly recommend her and her team to anyone who is looking for a caring and safe environment for their children!

This Family Child Care Has Been Amazing for My Daughter! We are so grateful for the care and love this family child care has shown our daughter, Metaya. We are forever grateful to the daycare owner and her staff. Our son attended from when he was 4 months old until he was three. She cultivates a safe and nurturing environment. She set the foundations for both social skills and early education. He was set up for success when he entered PreK and has truly thrived. He still visits the center regularly.

As any parent knows, we were looking for a child care which is the best for our child and gave us a peace of mind. We couldn't have the best care for our daughter than what she provided to our daughter for almost a year. We are ever grateful for her and her team!

We are so grateful for this caregiver - we have loved having first our daughter and now our son at Liyu. She and the teachers are warm, loving, fun, and nurturing. They taught our kids so much, from ABCs to potty training. We truly feel like family. We couldn't recommend her more highly!

Our daughter was cared for by this provider from 3 months old until almost 3 years old when we moved out of the area. We could not have asked for a more loving and safe environment for our daughter. She thrived in her growth and development and was so happy everyday with her and her staff. We loved her and were sad to leave but still keep in touch.

I cannot give enough stars to this caregiver! My two children have attended her daycare since they were 7 months old and they have excelled and learned so much under her care. she feeds them a variety of nutritious foods, plans fun activities, and has taught my older daughter how to count and sing the alphabet and is now teaching her to write. most importantly though, she has created an environment of love. my children are cared for there in the same way they are cared for at home. there is nothing better! additionally, she communicates well to parents, and has been very receptive and supportive when I asked her for parenting advice! she’s a total pro, and my kids and I feel that she and her staff are family.

We send both of our kids to this daycare and absolutely love the daycare. The owner and her staff are so caring of children. The kids get fed healthy food everyday and play a variety of activities and games. I love the one class mixed age set up as I think it really helps the development as the younger children are always trying to keep up with the older kids. They go to the library and to the park and splash pad for field trips.
