The Harbor School's Preschool program is dedicated to the development of the whole child. The program, which is offered for children between ages 2 1/2 and 4 1/2, focuses on encouraging development in all areas - cognitive, social and emotional, and physical. Given that the Preschool years are a time of rapid developmental change, we recognize the importance of providing an environment that is protective and nurturing as well as cognitively challenging. Learning through play is the foundation of the Preschool program because play is the primary way young children learn about the world around them. Throughout the day, the children receive a suitable balance of independent time and teacher-directed activity. Children are given choices and are encouraged to explore and experiment, ask questions and learn to take risks. The program emphasizes open-ended activities in which each child experiences a feeling of success and process is valued over product. Teachers facilitate learning by structuring appropriate play opportunities, modeling positive social interaction and engaging children in developmentally appropriate activities and lessons that lead to success. In this way, children discover "how to learn," take pride in their accomplishments and become confident in their own abilities. The Harbor School's unique Junior Kindergarten program provides a wonderful transition between Preschool and Kindergarten for those children who need an additional year of growth and maturation before beginning the more formal side of school. The JK program fosters the development of problem solving skills, focusing on initiating ideas and resolving conflicts. Junior Kindergarten children develop confidence through cooperation and compromise when working in small or large groups. These students are encouraged to build on ideas and activities as they continue to grow and learn at their own pace. JK children also develop self-confidence and begin to understand the meaning of community service through a system of room jobs. They are ready to be responsible for their own personal belongings and needs and practice these skills every day. The children have a diverse choice of educational settings; they can choose the language arts table with the teacher, play word and math games, work at the art table, play in the building area or housekeeping area, or visit the library corner. Teachers expose the children to Mathematics, Reading readiness, and Writing in a more formalized manner. Longer-term projects are also now possible. Junior Kindergarten children enjoy instruction outside the classroom in other areas including Physical Education, Art, , Spanish, Music and Performing Arts and Library. Junior Kindergartners also have a healthy amount of outdoor play. Kindergarten is an exciting time as the children and teachers work and play together to make learning an unforgettable and enjoyable experience. While learning through play is still an important cornerstone of the program, students are ready for cooperative work in a larger group setting with skill development in all areas as the goal. Teachers gently guide their students to become independent thinkers and cooperative learners in a caring and nurturing classroom environment. Kindergartners are encouraged to show respect for themselves, adults, each other and the environment through modeling and role-playing. Each Kindergarten class writes and posts a set of rules to teach expected positive behavior, promoting a strong social and academic learning environment. In addition to making our Kindergarten a place where children are happy and excited to come to school, the teachers offer a challenging curriculum to help the children acquire the skills and behaviors that will promote their growth - socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically. Kindergarten students enjoy more direct instruction in Reading, Writing/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. In addition, they continue to enjoy lessons in several special subjects: Art, Library, Music and Performing Arts, Physical Education and Spanish. Kindergartners also enjoy an appropriate amount of outdoor playtime. The First Grade curriculum is designed to promote and encourage learning, self-expression, and creativity in a caring and happy classroom environment. The First Grade program encourages students to assume responsibility in the world around them and provides children with challenges necessary in developing skills for future learning. First Grade is a more formal time where children's activities require a longer period of time to complete. This is an exciting time as reading and writing become a major focus of First Graders' lives and are integrated throughout the curriculum. Instruction in these subjects comes in varied forms -- from reading and responding to the Morning Message, to instructional reading groups, to writing as a class, to individual writing. Likewise, Mathematics instruction is formalized, but also integrated throughout the curriculum as it builds on the activities in the classroom. First Graders continue to enjoy instruction in special subjects including: Art, Library, Music and Performing Arts, Physical Education and Spanish. Second Graders at The Harbor School continue developing and learning in the same positive manner as they did in earlier years. The teacher encourages each child to become an independent, self-motivated learner who takes an active part in his or her own learning process. The curriculum in Second Grade is integrated across subject matters. Math investigations can lend themselves to music or art, and scientific experiments may cross over into language, writing, math and art. Similarly, reading opens the door to the world in Second Grade. Though the children continue to have daily reading lessons in small groups, children also read many fiction and nonfiction books relating to the Science and Social Studies curriculum. Reading and Writing are everyday activities and are done in all subjects including Science, Math, Spanish and Social Studies. Second Graders are Harbor's senior class. As the oldest children in the school, they shoulder greater responsibility. They are encouraged to see themselves as role models for the younger children and realize that teachers and other students have high expectations of them. They act as "buddies" to the Preschool children, preparing stories and games to share with them. Extended Day The Harbor School has a variety of extended day opportunities available. Families may register for these programs on a semester or yearly basis, or in some instances on a drop-in basis when the need arises. These programs are supervised by Harbor faculty, and provide a safe, nurturing and fun place for children to be before and after school.

The Country Day School is located on four beautiful wooded acres that provide a stimulating and enriching learning environment for young children. ... The school's two historical classroom buildings with unique classrooms and nine playgrounds provide the perfect locations for learning both inside and outside of the classroom. The main building is named after the school's founder, Dorothy McCormick, and is home to six classrooms, a science room, an art studio, a library, and several porches that are used as outdoor classrooms during good weather. The Cottage building, located behind the main building, houses six additional classrooms, a multi-purpose room, kitchen, and faculty work area. During the summer camp program the children have the opportunity to learn how to swim in the heated pool designed specifically as a training pool for young children. Highlights of The Country Day School grounds are the many playgrounds named for their trees or other significant natural features. Each play area provides different physical challenges for young children and the children's outside time is scheduled so they may experience all the playgrounds on a rotating basis. In addition the school's movement program is held outdoors on the various playgrounds whenever possible. The outdoor areas of the school are also used to enhance the school's science curriculum offered both in the classroom and in the Nature Room by the science teacher. Using the grounds, the children learn about different animals and their habitats, birds, and insects and grow their own vegetables and plants in the school garden. The children particularly enjoy the nature trail known as the “North Woods” where they observe the life cycles of various plants and the ecological changes to the forest. The National Wildlife Federation has labeled the school's grounds as a “Certified School Yard Habitat,” a perfect place for young children to experience nature on a daily basis.

About Our School Founded in 1962, The Manor Montessori School was the first Montessori school established in the State of Maryland. It is also one of... the few Montessori schools to have constructed its own facility, in Potomac, which was specifically designed for children working in a Montessori environment. The Manor Montessori School provides a warm and nurturing atmosphere for children between the ages of two and nine. Campuses Our main campus, located in Potomac (off of Falls Road), offers classes at the Toddler (age 2) level, the Primary (ages 3-6) level and the Elementary (ages 6-9) level. Our second campus, located in Rockville (near Tuckerman Lane), offers classes at the Toddler (age 2) level and the Primary (ages 3-6) level. Our third campus, located in Bethesda, offers classes at the Toddler (age 2) level and the Primary (ages 3-6) level. ​Programs The Twos program is for the two year old child who need not be potty trained. It is available five days per week from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon or 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at all three locations. It is a loving and nurturing environment, as it is the child's first school experience. The Primary program is for those children who are three years old by September and potty-trained. At the Primary level we offer a half-day program from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., or a full-day program from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., five days per week. The Elementary program is a full-day program from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., five days per week. In addition, we offer extended daycare hours from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for children ages 3 through 9. Transportation Limited bus service is available to our Potomac campus. The bus route includes sections of Potomac and Bethesda. Extended Day Before and after school care is available on a full time, part time, or an occasional basis for ages 3 through 9. The hours are 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The three year old children are required by the Health Department to have a nap/rest period, which takes place after lunch. If a 3 year old child does not nap, after a short rest period, the staff member will allow the child to join her at a table to look at books, draw, paint, or do puzzles. The four year old children who no longer need a nap are placed in the enrichment program where Montessori materials are offered along with art, science, music, cooking, and story reading. Between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., all children from all classes are combined to eat a snack at 3:00 p.m. We offer a relaxed atmosphere with story time, arts, crafts, music, and dance. We also offer free play indoors or outdoors until the children are picked up. We ask that parents arrive by 5:45 p.m. to assure that pick up will be on time. A late charge will be applied for any child picked up after 6:00 p.m.

The mission of Little Flower School is to share in the educational ministry of the Catholic Church. About Our Classes Little Flower School has a staff of 23 teachers, 5 full-time aides and a school counselor. There is one classroom at each grade level from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8. The Pre-Kindergarten Program PreK students attend class daily from 8:10 A.M. to 12:00 Noon. Students may be enrolled in an optional Extended Lunch session which entends their day until 1:00 P.M. There is no additional After Care option for PreK students. The PreK classroom is staffed by a teacher and a full-time aide. Students participate in Physical Education and Music classes twice a week and Library once a week. The Kindergarten Program Kindergarten students attend class daily from 8:10 A.M. to 2:50 P.M. The classroom is staffed by a teacher and a full-time aide. Students participate in Physical Education and Music classes twice a week and Library and Art once a week. The Primary Grades Grade 1-3 classrooms are staffed by a teacher and a full-time aide. After Care Program A well-supervised and licensed After Care Program is available from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM on all days that school is in full-day session. There is no care on days with early dismissal. After Care Participants must be registered students at Little Flower School in Kindergarten -Grade 8. There is no After Care program for Pre-Kindergarten. We have a capacity of 25 children per day. Children must be pre-registered – drop-in students cannot be accepted. There is a $30 registration fee and a charge of $12 per day (billed monthly) regardless of the amount of time spent in attendance. Days often fill quickly so we encourage prompt registration at the beginning of the year. Any changes thereafter are dependant on space availability for the requested day.
