Fairfax United Methodist Church Preschool

We are an accredited preschool located in Fairfax City, near the... intersection of Rt. 50 and University Dr. The school began in 1976 and offers morning classes for three, four and five year olds. Most of our lead teachers have degrees in elementary education and many have done graduate level courses in the newer field of early childhood education. Our assistant teachers have related degrees, some in social work and some in elementary education or psychology. There are two teachers in each classroom and generally 14 three year olds, 16 four year olds and 18 children in the pre-kindergarten class. We have a large outdoor area for playground time, and we have an indoor area for playing when the weather is blustery. Registration begins the first week of January for our Church members and returning preschool families and for the community during the third week of January. We enroll on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional information about our program such as our philosophy and goals, registration information, forms and other details can be found on this site. We are an outreach of the United Methodist Church, but we welcome families of any religion or ethnic background, and love to share the traditions, music and foods of all our preschool families. We invite you to call or visit our preschool any time to ask questions, obtain information or to arrange a personal tour of the school. Contact Diana Jenkins, the Director at the preschool Office 703 591-3177. We love to talk about our program! Goals Fairfax United Methodist Church Preschool is committed to providing the best possible environment for nurturing young children. We encourage each individual child by placing equal emphasis on physical, social, emotional, creative, intellectual and spiritual development. Rich and varied active learning opportunities, guided by warm, self-awareness and overall competence. We are dedicated to supporting the child and the family. Our curriculum is based on the belief that, for children, play is a developmental opportunity to explore their world, find out how to get along with others, test their skills and muscles, try out new ideas, and problem-solve. We offer daily opportunities to explore art media, science, writing, dramatic play, building, math, literature and the outdoors. Teachers guide and extend the play to refine emerging social and academic skills. All of the activities presented by the teachers are carefully evaluated for a positive educational outcome that can be incorporated into play while giving children lots of practice of important skills. Our program is a part of the Church's educational and outreach ministries and age-appropriate Christian values guide all curriculum areas. A loving atmosphere of acceptance, trust and structured freedom is our goal to help move children toward love of self, others and God. Our Preschool admits children of any race, religion, national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges and activities generally accorded or made available through the program.

Winwood Children's Center

Thank you for your interest in Winwood Children’s Center. We are... located at Lee Jackson Memorial Highway. Our center has been part of the community since Sept. 1998. My name is Katy Thiltgen and I am the Director of the center. I am originally from Pennsylvania where I attended Kutztown University and obtained my Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education with a concentration in Early Childhoods. I started with the company in Aug. 2004 as a teacher, an Assistant Director, and since January 2009 the Director. Heather Gutierrez is our Assistant Director. She began as a toddler teacher in 2006 at our South Riding location. In addition to her experience with the toddlers, she was a three year old teacher, and then the Assistant Director. After a brief leave from Winwood, Heater returned in Sept. 2013 as the Assistant Director at our Fairfax location. She has an Associate’s degree in Psychology and currently is in school for a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. We have over 30 amazing, dedicated teachers with over 110 years of experience with Winwood! The majority of our teachers are CPR and First Aid certified and many have their CDA, Associates, Bachelors, or Master degrees. Our curriculum is designed to strengthen and broaden the emerging intellect of our students. In addition to our daily Language Arts, Art, Science, and Math small group projects, we offer a STARs program which highlights weekly lessons in music, sign language, Spanish, and art and a monthly exercise program. The children experience our state of the art computer lab including a SMARTboard on a daily basis. Children in the Preschool III program through Kindergarten also have the opportunity to participate in ballet and soccer. We offer before and after school care for Greenbriar East, Greenbriar West, Waples Mill, and Navy. We also provide care for teacher work days, snow days, Spring Break, Winter Break, and summer camp. We strive to have great parent-teacher communication to keep you involved with your child’s day. In the infant, infant 2, toddler, and two year old classrooms you receive a daily sheet about your child’s day. You will find bi-weekly progress reports in the preschool classrooms. All of our classrooms send home a monthly newsletter and twice a year a developmental assessment of your child. In addition, our Open Door Policy and web camera keeps you connected at a moment notice. On behalf of all our wonderful teachers, I invite you to stop by and visit our school. We would enjoy meeting you and your family and introduction you to ours.
