Mount Vernon Presbyterian Preschool
At MVPC Preschool, we follow a theme-based curriculum, which motivates children and unlocks the natural learner in every child. Through this curricular model teachers and children take a holistic approach to learning. Concepts, ideas and lessons are integrated within each theme and are revisited in later themes. As children discover, play and explore, they form patterns and understand the connections in the learning process. Our program is half day (9am to noon) and children must be 30 months old by Oct. 1st to enroll. We have extended day “Lunch Bunch” for one hour on Monday through Friday. Most days we also offer a changing variety of After School Enrichment Classes that have included Engineering, Art, Science, Cooking, Drama, Zoom around the Room, Spanish, Crafts and Book Buddies. These classes are from 1 to 2pm. Children attend chapel, say grace before snack time and are encouraged to grow spiritually in their faith-based tradition. To enhance our dynamic curriculum students attend weekly yoga, music and library classes. We have a large fenced and shady playground, equipped with modern playground equipment and lots of wide open space for active and creative play during our student’s daily recess time. When the weather limits outdoor time we have a large indoor space with soft play equipment for indoor recess. Our 4 Day and Pre-K students participate in the fun and hands on school readiness curriculum, Get Set for School by “Handwriting Without Tears”. This program is an award winning curriculum that focuses on playful learning to develop coloring, drawing, early math, literacy and handwriting readiness skills. For more information about our curriculum for all classes please see the Parent Handbook.
Fairfax Presbyterian Preschool
For 60 years, Fairfax Presbyterian Preschool (FPP) has provided quality, early childhood education to children ages 2 ½ to 5 years. Founded as a mission of Fairfax Presbyterian Church, FPP welcomes children of all faiths, cultures, and abilities. FPP’s programs provide rich and varied learning opportunities which contribute to a child’s social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth. FPP is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Philosophy FPP’s philosophy is that children learn best through play. A child’s learning experiences are more enriching when the child is engaged in the process and when that process is fun. Through play, we can assess the individual, social, physical, and intellectual needs of each student in an environment that is as exciting as it is natural. Moreover, children learn an amazing amount when they are having fun! To further our philosophy, classroom curriculum include a mixture of structured and unstructured activities. Children have a daily circle time and arts and crafts activities, as well as unstructured play time in classroom centers and outside on the playground. Parent Participation The strong sense of community felt at FPP is fostered by our use of Parent Helpers in the classrooms. FPP is a parent participation preschool and relies on parents or designated caregivers to serve as volunteers in their children’s classrooms approximately 5 times throughout the school year. Serving as a Parent Helper gives parents the unique opportunity to be a part of their child’s school day. It also encourages parents to get to know their child’s teacher and classmates, as well as other preschool parents and FPP staff. Parents, grandparents, and nannies are all encouraged to serve as Parent Helpers. For safety and security, FPP conducts background checks and FBI fingerprinting on all adults working in the classrooms.
