SHAWNEE WEEKDAY EARLY LEARNING CENTER My son is 3 years old and transitioned to the Preschool building 3 days ago.He also just started a half day preschool program out of the building, is newly potty trained, riding bus for the first time, is in a new classroom with new kids, and new teachers. Thats a lot of change for a 3 year old. But because he is having issues taking a nap, is crying when told to stay on his cot for 2 hours, and had 1 accident, we were told he is too high maintenance for the overwhelmed staff. In addition, since they do not have the funding to adequately run a program they need to exit him from the daycare. My son has an IEP for speech, not anything behavioral. He has cognitive issues. My son has never spit at anyone. He does blow raspberries when he is mad, but no saliva is launched out of his mouth. This accusation just started when they wanted him to take 2 hour naps. E-mail between my husband and the director of the centers: Cheryl Munson Thu, Sep 8, 9:36 PM to me Kate sent Grant home today because she did not know what else to do. After speaking to the staff in the classroom, I do not think it's going to work out having Grant in our preschool program. I told Dad we would try, but he's had several accidents and he's not responding well to the classroom structure and the teachers at all. I know this is short notice and I'm sure you need care for him Friday. Go ahead and drop him off tomorrow, but if we're having the same issues we've had so far this week, someone will have to pick him up. If you need help getting him on and off the bus next week, we can probably accommodate that too, but he will need to be picked up before nap, which is 12:30. The teachers count on nap time to get their paperwork done, lesson planning, follow up, and also take their breaks...Grant has required someone to sit with him all week as he cries, makes louds noises, throws things, spits at the teachers, and has kept several children up who need their naps. Twice, one of the teachers could not take her break and is now in overtime, and today I had to pull in another teacher to help several times. Let me know if you need us for the bus next week. If that's the case, then we'll make is official last day Thursday, 9/15. Please connect with me tomorrow. I should be in the office most of the day. My office number is [redacted] ext 102. Thank you, Cheryl A. Munson Administrator Shawnee Weekday Early Learning Center Lance Stechschulte 8:10 AM to cheryl, me Hi Cheryl, I don't understand how 3 days is considered a trial period. Also, he has had 1 accident while he has been at the daycare during these 3 days. He does not take naps but would sit quietly and watch a tv show. With that being said, Grant will not be in today as he is not feeling well. Also since he is being kicked out of the program we will also be pulling Kate out. Please have all their stuff available for pick-up (including Kate's inhaler) at the end of the day as today will be their last day. Lance Cheryl Munson 12:32 PM to Lance, me I am very sorry. We do not put the TV on during nap as that will keep kids awake instead of them falling asleep. They do put on meditation music and calming videos on the smartboard to help them relax. As I told you previously, this class is very high maintenance even before Grant moved up and it's not been a good transition. Last year's group was so good and our parents were excellent and so supportive, it gave us the extra time to work with Kate individually and get her where she needed to be. My staff adore Kate and will be so sad she is leaving, but completely understand why you must withdraw her. This is not just about Grant, we do not have the extra support and/or finances to provide the teachers and classroom with what they need to care for all children. It's very frustrating for us as ODE sites get all kinds of extra funding for additional staff for children who are on IEP's or need extra help. We do not get ANY of the same money or support. So we ultimately are failing you, Grant, and your family and I am truly sorry. They will have everything together when you pick up today for both Grant and Kate. I will refund the registration fees to your account and whatever credit is on the account will be refunded to you. The accountant will be in on Monday and I'll have him make out the check and put in the mail.
Response from the provider:
I will not talk about a specific child's situation as that is very unprofessional and we keep our families information confidential. However, not every child is suited for every program. And that is a discussion I have with the parents before a child starts. I wish them well and hope they found another program that suited their needs better than we could.
