Immanuel Montessori School, Mount Airy

About

When her first son was in preschool, Marie Atalla desired a school where the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori are purely applied, so as to provide children with a unique stimulating and nurturing educational environment that will allow them to acquire positive work habits and develop the academic basics with joy, pride and sense of accomplishment. The school opened its doors on September 12th, 2007 with one fully prepared Montessori classroom that accommodates twenty-seven children between the ages of two and five. In 2010, the school opened a second classroom with the same capacity. Our school’s philosophy adheres to the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori who believed that children have a great capacity to learn at a very early age and therefore designed an environment that fosters that capacity and helps children develop both emotionally and academically. Our school further believes that any child can enjoy being and learning in a Montessori environment and it is therefore our policy not to test any child before admission. Testing, we believe, puts the child under an unnecessary pressure and takes away the pleasurable aspect of the educational experience that we would like to offer our children.

As preschool comes to an end and I reflect on the school year, I wanted to share our experience at Immanuel Montessori School. As a mother of three, I have had many experiences with preschools, and I do not often write reviews. However, I felt compelled to write one for this school. My daughter has a severe phonological speech disorder and entered Immanuel Montessori School with an intelligibility rate close to 0%. We understood very little of her spoken language, and she relied heavily on gestures to communicate. With support from the Birth-to-Five Program through CCPS and her time at Immanuel Montessori School, she has truly blossomed. Her speech has improved significantly, she has made many friends, and I feel very confident in her readiness for kindergarten. The staff at Immanuel Montessori have been wonderful. Ms. Marie is responsive, professional, and was incredibly patient in answering my many emails when we first started at the school. My daughter has learned so much. She especially loved the hands-on units on Egypt, butterflies, and dinosaurs. Every day she comes home saying she had the best day. Within her first week at school, my daughter learned how to swing independently. Another surprising area of growth has been her willingness to try new foods. She now loves vegetables—especially cucumbers, broccoli, and corn—and often tells me that I do not make them as well as they do at school 🙂. My daughter absolutely adores her teachers and is very sad to leave them. They have done an exceptional job of meeting her where she is academically, building on her strengths, and helping her improve in areas where she needs additional support. This was my first experience with a Montessori school, and I have come to greatly appreciate the hands-on, student-centered approach, the opportunities for personal growth, and the minimal reliance on technology. In a world so dominated by screens, I truly value the screen-free environment they provide. We have had a wonderful experience and cannot thank the staff enough for the care, dedication, and encouragement they have shown throughout the year. They have played an important role in helping my daughter grow, and we will always be grateful for the positive impact they have had on her life.
Response from the provider:
Hello Kelly, Thank you so much for the wonderful review you left for our school. Your kind words truly mean a great deal to us, and we are sincerely grateful for your support. It has been an absolute pleasure having your daughter and your family as part of our school community this past year. We are honored to have played a role in her growth and development, and it has been incredibly rewarding to watch her blossom throughout her time with us. We will miss your family dearly and are grateful for the trust you placed in us. We wish you all the very best in the years ahead and hope that the wonderful memories and friendships made at Immanuel Montessori School will remain with you for a long time. Thank you again for your thoughtful review and for being such a valued part of our school community. Warm regards, Marie Atalla Director

I will start this review by saying that the curriculum and some of the staff at the school are great. Ms Marie does provide a true Montessori classroom and teaching method for the children. Most of the interactions my child has had at the school have been positive, and she has blossomed at the school. That being said, there have been many things I have not liked about the school, and how they handle things. 1. My daughter has had her face spat in by another student, with no incident reports provided or feedback about the incident from the school. 2. My daughter has literally had another student threaten to shoot her, my wife, and myself during class, and the school did nothing other than send one email to inform us of what happened. No punitive or corrective action was taken about the student who made the threat, and the student was back at school and playing around my daughter the very next day. 3. The school claims to provide a non-secular educational experience, but my daughter has been told her life was brought about through divine creationist ideologies by teaching staff. (She and her "soul" were created by God) 4. The meals provided by the school are very small and unsubstantial, and my daughter has regularly come home tired and hungry. 5. My daughter has come home with many significant bruises on her legs and arms, with no reference provided by the school. Even when an incident with another student did happen, causing the bruising, and reported at the time of the incident to the teacher, and still no report by the school or report filed. TLDR; The school does a good job teaching the kids, but downplays serious behaviors, including violent ones, and does a horrible job reporting things that happen to the parents.
Response from the provider:
Hello Serin: Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective. We care deeply about every child’s safety, wellbeing, and growth, and we take your concerns seriously. Your daughter’s experience and progress: She truly blossomed here. She is reading, writing, and doing math at a second-grade level or higher, and she consistently engaged with lessons and activities throughout the year. She appeared happy at dismissal with her mom, expressed affection for her teachers, and got along well with her friends. On her last day, she walked over, complimented my blouse, and gave me a hug—behavior we associate with a child who feels cared for and connected to her school community. Reporting of incidents: Prior to your review, you did not raise these concerns with me verbally or in writing. Each time I encountered your wife at school, her feedback was positive. Had you informed me of any unreported incidents, I would have addressed them promptly and thoroughly. Alleged threat involving another student: We acted with the safety of your child, her classmates, and our staff in mind. The child who made the statement had no history of violence or behavioral issues and is a gentle, soft-spoken student from a stable, caring family. Her family took the matter very seriously, spoke with her, and she wrote a heartfelt apology note that your daughter was excited to bring home. I explained our approach to you via email and also discussed it in person with your wife. Secular program: We offer a non-secular program. When you alerted us that a teacher mentioned God in class, we addressed it immediately. The teacher acknowledged it as an unintended slip and did not repeat it. For context, the teacher does not come from a religious background. A single mistake does not reflect our program’s stance, and we reinforce our non-secular guidelines with staff. Bruises and communication: We did not receive reports or observations from staff that matched the description of significant bruising, and no related concerns were raised to us at the time. If we had been informed, we would have documented, investigated, and communicated with you in accordance with our policies. Meals and nutrition: Our meals are approved by Excels and MSDE and meet nutrition guidelines, including vegetables, fruits, carbohydrates, and protein. Children receive fresh fruit in the morning, plus a weekly special snack the class prepares that connects to their learning themes (for example, the class recently made “dinosaur eggs” with rice krispies, crushed Oreos, and melted marshmallows, alongside the regular fresh red apple snack). At lunch, we do not limit portions: children are offered additional sandwiches and sides whenever they ask for more. We respected your decision to withdraw your daughter after the threat incident and your choice not to have her attend the graduation celebration, though we had hoped she could share that milestone with her friends to keep her memories of a school she loved sweet. We genuinely wish your family—especially your daughter—continued success and happiness in her next school.

I am writing this review to prospective parents. I am doing this because my husband and I went down a long and difficult road in an effort to find a daycare/school for our now 1.5 and 3.5 year old. It was a road that started at a daycare center that was clean and tidy, with very few violations, seemed very secure, and was at the right price. But we found out the hard way that we were overlooking some very important aspects that are so critical for our child's development, self confidence, happiness and ultimately our child's success. I won't go over our struggle getting here, but will talk about what we discovered after we did. Here is what we love... The education all students receive is amazing. Our infant daughter was doing educational activities there before she could walk. From helping the infants develop their basic motor skills and speech, to creative things like painting and building, and encouraging social skills, etc...we were amazed. Our oldest started at about 2.5 yr and came home early on talking about presidents and different countries. She was excited about getting a globe and finding countries. This is just one small example of the stuff she comes home with. We love that the primary goal of the program is to empower the kids to do things themselves, and to build their self confidence. This is so critical, and so powerful when they are learning from someone other than only their parents. The other big thing we love is how the "classroom learning" extends outside to the garden, chicken coup, dirt box, etc. It certainly makes it much harder for the teachers to clean up the kids and the school, and we greatly appreciate how each of the teachers has this same outlook on doing what is best for the ids, even if it is hard for the teachers and owner. Our oldest now barely is interested in TV, and would much rather draw, or go outside, or create something. We are grateful for Immanuel and Ava Wanas Montessori School, and can't thank Marie the owner, and all the teachers and staff enough. What they do is perhaps the most important job there is.

Ugh, where do I begin? The director is manipulative, dismissive, and verbally abusive. My child has come home with unexplained injuries, and I have seen a staff member inappropriately handling students. Everything is a facade- there are chickens, yes, but they are not taken care of well, everything is run down, dirty, and as cheap as possible. The poor staff is out of ratio frequently, and worked to death. A horrible experience.
