About Us The Little Folks School is an independent Nursery School for children ages two and a half to five, located in Georgetown. Founded over 40 years ago, Little Folks is devoted to the needs of the whole child with a focus on the Arts. Curriculum At the Little Folks School we create an environment for your child to learn through active exploration and interaction with teachers, other children, and the physical world around them. Our approach to meeting the needs of the whole child informs every curriculum decision. Play Our program is “play-based” with significant portions of the day devoted to self-directed, imaginary play. Our goal is to support and encourage activities initiated by the young child. Time spent in this way has great purpose and significance for the child; these activities are not random and have a pattern and organization in keeping with the child’s level of mental ability. Allowing the child time and freedom to complete these activities to his or her personal satisfaction nourishes that child’s powers of concentration and attention. At Little Folks, we respect and value the self-initiated play of young children. Pro-social Development Our program utilizes 8 strategies for developing pro-social behavior. We provide child-sensitive, age-appropriate care. The emphasis is on cooperation rather than competition. We consider the layout and arrangement of classrooms. Children’s literature is utilized. We initiate discussions about sharing and provide concrete experiences. We develop altruistic projects. Children are required to be responsible toward others. We develop daily rituals that cherish children. Physical Education The goal of our Physical Education program is to help children develop body and spatial awareness and to help them refine their emerging motor skills. Classes include aerobics, balancing activities, obstacle courses, and work with balls of all sizes. In addition, one class per week is devoted to Health, Safety and Nutrition.
