Discovery Village, Tarrytown

At Discovery Village classic and contemporary research and experience on early childhood learning come alive, translated into our playful approach. We are a high-quality daycare and preschool, serving children from 6 weeks to five years old. Discovery Village is unique. With guidance from their teachers, children at Discovery Village learn by doing – transforming their classrooms into places in a village. The possibilities are endless! Classrooms can be designed as homes, restaurants, science labs, zoos, rocket ships, and more; anything our children are interested in. Teachers take the lead with the infants, designing the classrooms as nurturing, caring places such as homes or gardens. As children’s interests develop they are able to make more and more choices about the design of their own places, stemming from their own curiosity and creativity. Learning in all subject areas at Discovery Village is carefully integrated into the experience of designing and living in our village places. This includes age-appropriate learning in the areas of speaking and listening, reading and writing, math and science, social studies and cultural studies, the arts and physical education, and social-emotional as well as character skill building. Our playful approach is grounded in experiential and project-based learning theory and research. It is a unique adaptation of “Reggio-inspired” learning, an educational philosophy emphasizing experiential learning, emerging from student interest, in a relationship-driven environment.
