About

Petit Scholars is a small childcare center located in the Brookland community of Northeast, Washington, DC. We are Montessori inspired and believe that children are capable of exploring and learning in a natural environment suited to fit their needs. We believe children should enjoy a balance of; structure, freedom, play and work. We are in tune to the needs of our children and families. Most of our families live in Brookland and surrounding communities. We have the feel of a loving and child centered community school. We have been operation for almost four years and we will soon open a second location at the Brookland Center located less than half a mile from our current program. We are expanding to meet the need of our growing community. Who are we? The team at Petit Scholars consists of educational professionals who are dedicated to early childhood education. Our staff is knowledgeable about the developmental, social, emotional, nutritional, and educational needs of our toddlers and preschoolers. We are passionate about our children and the work we do each day. We value our parents and view them as partners in our school. Our teachers and staff will work with families to personally ensure children experience a smooth transition into our program and gain the skills they need to be successful in preschool and beyond . About the Founder! My name is La Shada Ham-Campbell and for more than a decade I have been an educator and principal for more than a ddecade in Atlanta, Ga and Washington, DC. I am also a certified Montessori Toddler Directress and a mother of two. I am passionate about life, children, and education and I have spent the latter part of my professional career creating exemplar early childhood classrooms in public schools. I possess two graduate degrees in education and I am currenlty on hiatus in my pursiut of a doctoral degree in educational psychology with a subspecialty in early childhood education. I was born, raised, and educated in the Brookland community. Four generations of my family have lived in this community. I have called this neighborhood my home for more than thirty years. When searching for child care for my first son, I found that I was not overjoyed with the options available. My experience fueled my desire to open a quality early learning center. I spent three years planning and working towards opening a program in the community I love and live in.

Our son started at PS (south) when he was about 4 months old and he has thrived in their care. The directress is a mom of two young children and cares about each of the children at the center as well as her staff who are supported in their professional development. Even though it is a "center," the ratio of care-takers to children is great and it has a home-like feel. He is now almost 2 and a half years old and has developed into a cheerful, clearly loved, polite, and empathetic little boy. He chatters all weekend about his friends and his teachers. I think that the Montessori curriculum has helped him to know how to play by himself and with others, work out conflict (as developmentally appropriate), and most importantly has started him on the path to love learning and "learning how to learn". He is resourceful and creative in his play and is fun to observe. We are SO lucky to have found PS when we did! Thank you PS staff!

We have had an excellent experience with the Petit Scholars team. We feel lucky to have found them on our first day in a new (to us) neighborhood, and they took excellent care of our son for the past three years. Now, as he is ready to move on to preschool, our second son is ready to start his time at PS. Is there a better endorsement than repeat business? The teachers are excellent and the care is top notch. They do a variety of activities that will leave you impressed. Lots of outside play, including trips to a nearby playground. And most of all a loving environment with caretakers who are invested in the well-being of the children with whom they are entrusted.
