Fondly referred to as the “Wonders Neighborhood,” this Wonders school age program serves children from Bethesda Elementary and welcomes children who... commute from Ashburton, Bradley Hills, Chevy Chase and Wyngate Elementary Schools and Pyle and Westland Middle Schools. Wonders offers flexible enrollment options and provides before care starting at 7:00 am and after school care until 6:30 pm Monday through Friday. We offer full day programs when school is closed and half day programs on early dismissal days. Wonders at Bethesda is an active community of teachers and children who play and create active games, climb and play on the playground, have quite time for homework, and explore arts and crafts every afternoon. Curriculum The primary goal in our school age program is to create communities for children and their families that are fun, nurturing and enriching. Children are active learners. Wonders at Bethesda provides an environment where children can safely grow through self-guided and structured play. In addition to fostering imagination, play challenges children to expand social, emotional and intellectual tools. School age teachers carefully plan the program to balance homework with exercise and promote healthy eating habits. The before school program is designed as a gentle transition time from home to school. Children have the opportunity to read, finish homework, play board games or create artwork. Outside time and active games are also offered. Wonders' after school program curriculum is built around the concepts of friendship and being a good sport. Activities are designed to create opportunities for all children to explore and experience in ways that are meaningful to them. Activities incorporate seven learning areas: language and literacy, mathematical thinking, scientific thinking, social studies, personal and social development, physical development and the arts. The afternoon is a blend of child initiated and teacher initiated activities including outdoor play, afternoon snack, group time, choice times, homework and reading time. On days when schools have scheduled early dismissal or are closed, we provide a half or full day program. These longer days give us the opportunity to enhance our programming by planning special events, inviting specialists in to share their expertise or exploring the larger community on field trips.

Junior Kindergarten children enjoy instruction outside the classroom in other areas including Physical Education, Art, , Spanish, Music and Performing Arts and Library. Junior Kindergartners also have a healthy amount of outdoor play. Kindergarten is an exciting time as the children and teachers work and play together to make learning an unforgettable and enjoyable experience. While learning through play is still an important cornerstone of the program, students are ready for cooperative work in a larger group setting with skill development in all areas as the goal. Teachers gently guide their students to become independent thinkers and cooperative learners in a caring and nurturing classroom environment. Kindergartners are encouraged to show respect for themselves, adults, each other and the environment through modeling and role-playing. Each Kindergarten class writes and posts a set of rules to teach expected positive behavior, promoting a strong social and academic learning environment. As the oldest children in the school, they shoulder greater responsibility. They are encouraged to see themselves as role models for the younger children and realize that teachers and other students have high expectations of them. They act as "buddies" to the Preschool children, preparing stories and games to share with them. Extended Day The Harbor School has a variety of extended day opportunities available. Families may register for these programs on a semester or yearly basis, or in some instances on a drop-in basis when the need arises. These programs are supervised by Harbor faculty, and provide a safe, nurturing and fun place for children to be before and after school.

Facts Tuition is reasonable and is all inclusive - no additional fees are charged for materials, meals, field trips or special events We are a private, non-profit, 501c3 organization founded in 1969. We comply with all conditions under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990. We are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of parents of enrolled children. Our Centers are licensed by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) - Office of Child Care. Our preschool programs are accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Our Centers participate in the US Department of Agriculture - Child and Adult Care Food Program. We accept vouchers for child care tuition from the Maryland State Purchase of Care Program (POC) and the Montgomery County Working Parents Assistance Program (WPA) We operate six child care centers, five are located in Montgomery County School buildings and two are located within Montgomery County Government facilities. CURRICULUM The various programs offered at Rockville Day Care incorporate all the basic areas of learning into the curriculum. Children are encouraged to learn at their own pace in an atmosphere that is relaxed and nurturing. The important result is the development of a positive attitude toward learning and an enthusiasm for it. Rockville Day Care uses the Creative Curriculum for our preschool programs. Lesson plans are written weekly and posted in the classroom for parent information and reference. In addition to this resource, RDCA employs Program Directors who visit each classroom on a periodic basis. They serve as a resource to Directors, and the classroom teaching staff, to ensure that the program meets our objectives, to assist with classroom management techniques, help provide ideas for room arrangement and to observe interactions between staff, parents and children. Parents are encouraged to review the curriculum. Suggestions or ideas from parents are always welcome. The variety of activities provided in our programs help to promote growth in these areas of development. Children may choose to participate in creative dramatics, block building, arts and crafts, stories and finger plays, music and movement activities, sand and water play, science and nature activities, manipulative and small motor activities, basic math concepts, reading readiness, outdoor recreational activities, community awareness and field trips. Each day is balanced with opportunities for individual exploration with materials and equipment available in the classroom (generally referred to as free play) at activity centers, and teacher directed small group and large group activities that reinforce weekly themes and promote cognitive skills. Children are also guided to develop appropriate social skills and problem solving techniques. The actual daily routine, schedule and lesson plans are available for parent review in each classroom. The daily schedule will vary from program to program and is dependent on the age of the children in the group, the needs and interests of the class, the incorporation of swimming, field trips and special events into the daily routine, planned meals, rest periods, outdoor play, etc. Schedules are developed by each classroom teacher. The teachers observe the needs and interests of the group and adjust their schedules accordingly.
