Mount Vernon Presbyterian Preschool
At MVPC Preschool, we follow a theme-based curriculum, which motivates children and unlocks the natural learner in every child. Through this curricular model teachers and children take a holistic approach to learning. Concepts, ideas and lessons are integrated within each theme and are revisited in later themes. As children discover, play and explore, they form patterns and understand the connections in the learning process. Our program is half day (9am to noon) and children must be 30 months old by Oct. 1st to enroll. We have extended day “Lunch Bunch” for one hour on Monday through Friday. Most days we also offer a changing variety of After School Enrichment Classes that have included Engineering, Art, Science, Cooking, Drama, Zoom around the Room, Spanish, Crafts and Book Buddies. These classes are from 1 to 2pm. Children attend chapel, say grace before snack time and are encouraged to grow spiritually in their faith-based tradition. To enhance our dynamic curriculum students attend weekly yoga, music and library classes. We have a large fenced and shady playground, equipped with modern playground equipment and lots of wide open space for active and creative play during our student’s daily recess time. When the weather limits outdoor time we have a large indoor space with soft play equipment for indoor recess. Our 4 Day and Pre-K students participate in the fun and hands on school readiness curriculum, Get Set for School by “Handwriting Without Tears”. This program is an award winning curriculum that focuses on playful learning to develop coloring, drawing, early math, literacy and handwriting readiness skills. St. Luke's Day School

St. Luke's Day School offers an environment that encourages curiosity... and an awareness of the excitement of learning. St. Luke's Day School believes in the beauty, creativity and intelligence of a child's play. When singing, playing and adventuring, our students learn to have fun while participating in group activities and dynamics. The program is designed to help children develop habits of observation, questioning and listening. Children are encouraged to become aware of their feelings and to express them in an appropriate manner. Our program, with various learning activities and playtime, prepares the children to recognize and use their intellectual and creative abilities in future learning tasks. We base our curriculum on an initiative developed by the Virginia Department of Education called Virginia's Foundation Blocks for Early Learning. Look often into our busy, noisy, creative classrooms and see your child at work and play. Play is an important part of learning and creates the appropriate skill level for optimum learning to be achieved. Above all, we give them time to grow; time and room to explore; to experiment; and to discover. We offer them time to play… time to be a child. The children are introduced to a balanced program of interaction with friends in both teacher directed and child-directed experiences. The daily schedule includes free choice of time spent in the play area, circle activities for the group, Music class, Creative Movement class and a weekly chapel service. We are committed to working closely with parents toward the welfare of the whole family. Parents are welcome to visit during the child's time at school after checking in with the front office.

Tauxemont Cooperative Preschool

Tauxemont has been teaching children (ages 2 1/2 through... kindergarten) a love of learning since 1942. The Tauxemont learning experience encourages parents to participate with their children during this major step away from home. At Tauxemont, we enjoy being involved with our children both during school and at our special events. Your family involvement is what makes your child's experience at Tauxemont unique. Tauxemont lights the spark of learning that will continue for a lifetime. Newcomers and long-time area residents alike find "our little school in the woods" a center for lifelong friendships. Tauxemont Preschool believes that formal education is best begun in the first grade and that our primary purpose is to provide an environment for a child to grow emotionally, developmentally, physically, socially, and intellectually. In order to provide experiences of this nature, our preschool: provides a wide variety of activities geared to the proper age and skill level of the children; emphasizes personal standards and pride of achievement rather than simple conformity to group standards and encourages the child to recognize that the process is as important as the product; encourages creative arts in addition to crafts, and dramatic and creative play in addition to organized games and activities; considers individual needs and different rates of development in children along with the aims of group activity and socialization recognizes that the most desirable discipline is self-discipline, and that encouragement and consistent standards are more effective than punishment in the development of self-discipline offers a developmentally appropriate program with out the use of formal devices, drills, competitive learning, or rigid routines.
