Crescenta-Canada Nursery School
Our goal at CCNS is to provide rich experiences and opportunities for children to develop sound relationships with other youngsters and to provide a nurturing environment where children can develop good feelings about themselves, their abilities, and the world around them. Our school offers a place where you can share in your child's nursery school experience, meet other parents who are interested in participating and sharing in the same way...and who can actually have a hand in the running of the school. Our school is Christian based, and is non-denominational (we lease space from our host church). Our Christian practices include prayer before snacks, the celebration of holidays, and periodically the pastor of our host church will share bible stories with the children. Our School is for children between the ages of 2 years 9 month through 5 years. Our classes meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We now offer an optional 5 day a week program for the Busy Bear class (4 year olds). Each School day is from 9 to 12:00. The school year, including holidays, corresponds with that of Glendale and/or La Canada Unified School District. All children must be toilet trained. Every effort is made to balance classes according to gender. The class size is 15-20 children per class. Each class has a teacher and two to three parent aides, which makes our school one of very few to have an adult to child ratio of 1 to 5.
Child Educational Center
The Child Educational Center, part of the JPL and Caltech communities, provides early care and education with a pioneering focus on heart-centered, progressive education and outdoor learning at seven sites in La Canada and Pasadena, California. The CEC offers full- and part- time programs for children up to five years at its La Canada site, the Cooperative Preschool at Caltech, as well as the after-school programs and summer camps for children in grades K – 6. Through consulting and outreach services and The Outdoor Classroom Project® initiative, the CEC is transforming the way early childhood educational programs provide care to children across California and beyond. The CEC’s Infant-Toddler and Preschool program is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The Child Educational Center’s (CEC) Cooperative Preschool at Caltech, previously available only to families with Caltech or JPL affiliations, is now opening its enrollment to all community families. The Cooperative Preschool operates a morning (8:30-11:30am) program for 9 months each year, beginning in September and running through May. This program utilizes curriculum that is stimulating and challenging, as well as nurturing and supportive of each child's learning style. Outdoor play and exploration is an integral component of each day, encouraging children to develop knowledge and love of the natural world. The daily schedule provides for activities specifically geared to the various developmental levels of children in the program, as well as opportunities for children to interact, teach, and learn from one another. As a cooperative, parents take turns participating as assistant teachers under the guidance of professional CEC staff. This combination of professional teachers and parent volunteers creates a ratio of 1 adult to every 4 children or better. The Cooperative Preschool at Caltech embodies the same philosophical approach and mission as the CEC. Enrollment is open throughout the year on a space-available basis. Listed tuition rates vary depending on full- or part-time scheduling, if you work for Caltech or JPL, and other factors.

Tiny Tigers Preschool

The Tiny Tiger Pre-school Program is designed with the young child in mind. We offer a variety of schedules and age appropriate programs with the... hope of meeting the individual needs of the families we serve. Being a Christian owned organization we see our service to you as our primary goal. Our intent, as always, is to be blessing to the community. Our goal is not to preach or teach Jesus Christ to the parents or the children, for that is the function of a church. But rather to be an example of Christ in our day in and day out living experience with them in a normal pre-school setting. We provide the highest quality day care and pre-school education under the direction of a trained, caring, and loving staff. The activities and curriculum are chosen to help and stimulate both mind and body. We offer a cheerful and safe environment where children develop a sense of belonging, well being, and self worth. We continually strive toward providing the best opportunities for emotional, physical, and academic growth during these formative years. The Tiny Tigers program is based on principles that foster balance among the cognitive, physical, emotional and social aspects of each child. It is our goal to help each child develop a strong and a balanced sense of his/her abilities, to recognize relationships with a sense of empathy and kindness. Each child is valued for their individuality and encouraged at his/her own pace. At Tiny Tigers we acknowledge the tremendous significance of the early years of development on the long-term health, intelligence, and psychological aspects of all people. During these formative years it is our commitment to provide a safe, nurturing and loving environment for young children to learn and grow. We have a summer program that allows the graduating class stay for the summer and enjoy their last days at Tiny Tigers with their friends. Our summer program is more relaxing and just having great summer fun. We have water play every Friday where the children can play in pools of water, sprinklers, and water tables with boats, shovels, buckets, balls and trucks. The children enjoy doing different activities for the summer. We also have parachute games with music, bouncing balls, and objects with letters and numbers on them so the learn while having fun. The graduating class ( The Tigers II) have field trips to local parks and merchants in the town. They tour a grocery store, make an arraignment at the local florist, see the pet store, purchase lunch at a restaurant with the own money and send a letter to themselves from the post office. Tiny Tigers also accepts children that are in the CCRC and DCFS programs. We are licensed with each of these and work with each agency to insure their rules and regulations. We work closely with each social worker to insure care for each child. Tiny Tigers Preschool is a licensed child care center in Sunland, CA with the license issued by the L. A. Day Care-East (33). Child Educational Center

For infants and toddlers, the program focuses on four areas: -self-esteem and personal awareness; -communication skills; -social skills; and... -physical development. Self-awareness and positive self concept are fostered by the caregivers through close personal contact, communication with positive reinforcement, permitting freedom of activity, and respect for the child as an individual. Communication skills are fostered through thoughtful speaking with the children during routine tasks and in stories, music, and the description of activities occurring in their presence. Social development is largely a function of the babies' interaction with adults, however, their development is enhanced through physical contact, interaction in play, and structured group activities. Physical development is the foundation upon which cognitive development is based. Responsive adults provide the most significant experience, but the environment and physical activities are structured to maximize development. Infants are supported and encouraged in their natural inclination for independent physical activity. While the developmental issues for infants and toddlers are similar, certain differences are addressed in the toddler program. Toddlers are more mobile, more capable, and experiencing significant language development. Their program features a more challenging yard, with climbing structures and opportunities to take walks around the school. Group activities are begun featuring singing, playing musical instruments, playing movement games, and hearing stories. Because toddlers' attention spans are short and rapidly shifting, the program is highly flexible and individualized. Children are placed in groups based on the following considerations: -development (emotional, social, cognitive, physical), -chronological age, -peer relations, and -available space. Children generally remain with the same group until the following September, unless developmental considerations warrant other placement. The daily schedule provides for activities specifically geared to the similar developmental level of children in each classroom, as well as opportunities for children of different ages and developmental levels to interact, teach and learn from one another.
