Imagine Preschool
Imagine Preschool's director, Suraiya, has 15 years of teaching experience. She has helped other schools develop meaningful curriculum before starting her own school. Imagine Preschool is in a beautiful home setting in the heart of the La Crescenta mountains and a fully licensed large daycare. Imagine is a unique school because it follows the Reggio-Emilia approach to education- "an excellence in early childhood care". We believe that every child is intelligent, capable, and a protagonist in his own learning. Therefore we foster critical thinking, creativity, and of course, imagination! Our teachers follow the interests’ of the child and create individualized projects. These projects require working with professional artist materials for building, drawing, painting, sculpture, clay, wire work, and so much more, to develop social, reading, writing, science and number knowledge. Also Spanish, music, and yoga is part of the daily curriculum. Visit our website and Gallery page to see examples of the children’s work. We invite you to take a tour as we are currently enrolling. Our teaching focuses on healthy social and emotional skills, which are modeled by our teaching staff, who have had a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience. The teachers also guide children’s behavior through conflicts, by working in small groups, teachers are able to observe children closely. Teachers use inquiry-based language to encourage children to explore and discover their own answers and to develop their own theories about the world around them. Teachers partner with children to help each child discover his or her place in the world.
Child Educational Center
The Child Educational Center, part of the JPL and Caltech communities, provides early care and education with a pioneering focus on heart-centered, progressive education and outdoor learning at seven sites in La Canada and Pasadena, California. The CEC offers full- and part- time programs for children up to five years at its La Canada site, the Cooperative Preschool at Caltech, as well as the after-school programs and summer camps for children in grades K – 6. Through consulting and outreach services and The Outdoor Classroom Project® initiative, the CEC is transforming the way early childhood educational programs provide care to children across California and beyond. The CEC’s Infant-Toddler and Preschool program is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The Child Educational Center’s (CEC) Cooperative Preschool at Caltech, previously available only to families with Caltech or JPL affiliations, is now opening its enrollment to all community families. The Cooperative Preschool operates a morning (8:30-11:30am) program for 9 months each year, beginning in September and running through May. This program utilizes curriculum that is stimulating and challenging, as well as nurturing and supportive of each child's learning style. Outdoor play and exploration is an integral component of each day, encouraging children to develop knowledge and love of the natural world. The daily schedule provides for activities specifically geared to the various developmental levels of children in the program, as well as opportunities for children to interact, teach, and learn from one another. As a cooperative, parents take turns participating as assistant teachers under the guidance of professional CEC staff. This combination of professional teachers and parent volunteers creates a ratio of 1 adult to every 4 children or better. The Cooperative Preschool at Caltech embodies the same philosophical approach and mission as the CEC. Enrollment is open throughout the year on a space-available basis. Listed tuition rates vary depending on full- or part-time scheduling, if you work for Caltech or JPL, and other factors.

Green Stem Schoolhouse

Grown out of a home in Atwater Village, Green Stem Schoolhouse is a... progressive early school for children. Creating an intimate, stimulating and fun program, guided by caring and enthusiastic teachers is our passion. Green, the symbolic color of growth and creativity weaves together with STEM education. We believe adult role modeling is key to children's success with social experiences. Therefore learning and being inspired together is our main activity. Our staff is composed of experienced teachers who are working professionals in a variety of other fields including Heath, Sports, Design and Art. At GSS, we cook, sculpt, compose, dream, question and resolve together hence our school motto "Learning is living". Our school is influenced by the child-advocating communities of Reggio Emilia and rooted in the application of progressive early childhood development research and philosophies. We view knowledge as elastic and co-constructed particularly in the prolific early years of childhood. There are many things we find fascinating about children, but In particular, their aptitude to learn, express, think outside the box and make metaphors are traits of the young child that that we celebrate and highlight. The founder of GSS, Maha Saab, received her Bachelor in Arts from Parsons School of Design and Masters in Arts from UCLA. She has been working with preschools for over ten years, beginning with the pioneering, Reggio-inspired schools in Santa Monica. In 2011, she became a mom to Tesneem and joined Echo Park's Historic Playgroup as the program coordinator.
