Our programs contain developmentally appropriate methods developed to meet the needs of each child and incorporate learning in our well-equipped classrooms and playgrounds. Primary care is the core of our infant and toddler program. Infant & Toddler Program Our Infant & Toddler Program provides a loving atmosphere designed to meet each child’s individual needs. When a baby enrolls, he or she is assigned to a primary caregiver. This personal, nurturing process fosters a trusting relationship between the child and caregiver where the infant’s developmental needs set the day’s schedule. Our Toddler Program is designed for the child who wants to explore their world as they develop a sense of self. Soft play areas, indoor play equipment, and a variety of pull and push toys enable toddlers to discover and explore in a safe, fun, and exciting environment. Overview of Preschool Full day child care curriculum includes morning preschool classes for children two to four years of age. The children are assigned to a specific class according to their age and level of development. Class time is between 8:30 am and 12:00 noon. Each class enjoys outside play on our creative playgrounds. Nap-time provides a soothing, restful period after a busy morning. The afternoon program provides the child with supervised activities in the areas of music, story time, games, creative play and art. Two-Year-Old Program Our two-year-old program is a beginning readiness program where children are first introduced to formal group learning experiences. Teachers create lesson plans that further the work of language recognition and vocabulary building in the young preschool child. They can name colors, shapes, and relative size and orientation of objects in the world. They recognize simple math and science concepts. Children learn to sit together in small groups in order to sing, create with art materials, sort and classify interesting objects, and listen to stories. Parents receive periodic assessment reports detailing their child’s progress through the major expected milestones of this period. Three-Year-Old Program Designed to develop a natural and life long excitement for learning, our three year old students learn how to build early writing and literacy skills, engage in concrete mathematical experiences and learn how to make friends. This is done as the children Listen to stories, retell events, and perform dramatic play with puppets and props. The teacher selects a weekly theme to develop these skills and sends home a copy of the lesson plan each week. We also offer creative, well-equipped classrooms, field trips and special events. Sign Language At Northern Virginia Academy, we believe that from the moment babies are born, they start communicating with the world around them. For this reason, we have incorporated a sign language program for our Infant and Toddler programs at three of our four campuses, which are Landsdowne, Lorton, and Burke. The purpose of sign language program is to enable infants and toddlers as young as 6-8 months to communicate before they can speak. Parents will be given basic information about the signs being worked on and informed about their child’s progress and are encouraged to sign at home with their children. No matter what your child’s age or interest, we have a program designed for them. Contact us to learn more.

Aquinas Montessori School

ABOUT US Aquinas Montessori is a private AMI school of 50 years with two campuses in Mount Vernon and in Old Town Alexandria that provide a... nurturing, loving, joyous environment where each child is respected and treated as an individual. Our optimal class sizes allow students to work at their own pace and level, and AMI certified teachers guide and help children to develop autonomy, creative thinking and love of learning. Aquinas Montessori is a non-sectarian school and we admit all children, ages 3 to 12, regardless of race, creed, color or origin. Currently in our 51st year, we have consistently produced highly confident, self-motivated learners who are well prepared for their middle school years and beyond. Our families attest that they have indeed found a unique environment in Montessori classrooms where lasting values are emphasized, where kids are truly happy. SCHOOL PROGRAMS PRIMARY LEVEL : ages 3 to 6 at the Aquinas and Old Town Montessori Schools The Primary curriculum is a fully comprehensive three year program where children learn to compare, classify and clarify the world around them. Mathematical manipulative materials help the child to learn concepts of math, such as sequence, place, value, operations and memorization of math facts. Language exercises include spoken language that helps to develop vocabulary and phonemic awareness while use of tactile and manipulative materials leads to development of writing and reading. Exercises in practical life improve motor skills, independence, control and concentration. The child also learns the basics of the world's geography, geology, history, astronomy and biology through materials and stories, and art and music are integrated into daily classroom activities. ELEMENTARY LEVEL : ages 6 to 12 at the Aquinas Montessori School The elementary level continues the development of the child, the curriculum at this level is expanded as widely as possible to enkindle interest in every area of culture, mathematics, geometry, language, history, geography, botany, zoology, earth science, chemistry, physics, art, music, crafts, drama, and physical education. The elementary children also participate in the Junior Great Books Program. Our purpose is to lead the children toward Dr. Maria Montessori's goal of "cosmic education, which is a complete vision of reality and man, and an ability to interpret both of them in their essence, nature, and reciprocal relationship." The work at each age group represents a continuous program so the parents should be committed to allowing their children to complete each three-year cycle. AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS The Drama Club This is a highlight of the school year unique to the Aquinas students. Each year the Upper Elementary Students participate and perform in a production of a Broadway Jr. musical. Our students get the experience of performing on stage with wireless microphones, a professional sound technician, videographer and choreographer. The end results are unforgettable performances, enhanced self-esteems and memories captured on DVDs that can be shared and cherished for a lifetime. An experience of performing on stage is life changing for many a shy student. The Classics Club Upper Elementary and Third Year Lower Elementary Students read enthralling classic tales from around the world. The students meet with a Classics Club leader on a monthly basis to partake in lively discussion. At each meeting, the following month’s reading selection will be revealed. This is a wonderful opportunity to expand one’s knowledge of classic literature. Girl Scouts Girl Scouts meetings are held at the Aquinas Montessori School. Lego Engineering club Lego Engineering club meetings are held at the Aquinas Montessori School. Silver Knights Chess club Silver Knights Chess club meetings are held at the Aquinas Montessori School. SUMMER CAMP Aquinas Montessori Summer Day Camp at Mount Vernon campus We would like to invite your child to join us in a stimulating summer adventure. Aquinas Montessori Summer Day Camp is about learning new skills, making new friends, having new experiences, and most importantly, it’s about plain, old fashioned fun! Our Montessori Summer Day Camp program promotes learning as a joy, which is never outgrown. We think your child will be as enthusiastic about it as the children we currently have with us; hence our invitation. A typical day for a 3 to 9 year old includes experience in a Montessori classroom, where the child manipulates a great variety of developmental materials. There are nature and art activities, stories, songs, and games. Our staff is composed of professionally trained teachers. Swimming instruction is provided daily by a certified instructor. The Aquinas heated pool ranges in depth from two and a half to five feet. This non-threatening size offers beginning and novice swimmers an opportunity for great success in a safe environment. Even the youngest swimmers feel comfortable in the shallow end and make remarkable progress in just a few weeks. Childhood is short —and so important in determining the course of a life. Do consider giving your child the opportunity to discover that learning is a joy!

Great Beginnings Daycare

Hi, my name is Andrea Brown and I am a home daycare provider in West Springfield. We are currently interviewing as we have an opportunity to provide... child care in our loving & nurturing home called Great Beginnings! Great Beginnings believes that children develop best in a loving, nurturing environment where active learning is encouraged. We know that your child will develop at a pace which may be completely different from the child sitting next to him/her. Hence, we provide a developmentally appropriate curriculum based on a child-centered perspective that acknowledges your child as a whole: a social, cognitive, emotional, and physical individual. At Great Beginnings we provide a developmentally appropriate curriculum based on a child-centered perspective that acknowledges your child as a whole: a social, cognitive, emotional, and physical individual. We create an environment which will motivate your child to discover and apply new skills. Children become active learners though play; we will observe your child and respond to inquiries and activities initiated by him/her. Great Beginnings follows a theme-oriented curriculum, with an emphasis on developmentally appropriate activities. Our goal is to offer all children individualized experiences that will help them develop socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically at their own rate! We believe that children learn best from each other. Therefore, we provide a relaxed, creative atmosphere in which children can foster new relationships with one another and explore a new environment and experiences. We also believe that children are individuals with diverse learning styles and emotional needs; at Great Beginnings, care and teaching is focused on the individual child. If you think this would be something you are interested in please feel free to contact me. Take care, Andrea
