We pledge to provide the highest academic standards in an environment which encourages and motivates students, instills respect and wisdom, enlivens creativity and builds a foundation to seek truth and live a life of abundance. KINDERGARTEN Kindergarten sets the groundwork for a lifetime of learning. At the Fairfax Christian School, children advance quickly in our safe, wholesome, joyful and nurturing environment with a friendly approach to structure and discipline and an enthusiasm for learning which establishes a strong educational foundation. Kindergarten students learn to read with phonics. Using this systematic approach to reading, the Fairfax Christian School has turned out strong readers for generations now. Based on the McGuffey Readers, our phonics curriculum has been used in private schools and by home-schooling families nationwide. Our small class size enables us to teach reading in small groups and one on one. Each day the students read aloud with their teacher. Students also have a group story time with their teacher and access to books in the classroom. The key is constant practice and making reading fun. Mathematical concepts begin with spatial and logical learning. Students learn to visualize numbers, count, begin factors, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Students are also introduced to concepts such as counting money and telling time. We use an assortment of manipulatives for hands-on learning to help aid students, including counters, patterned blocks, interlocking cubes, play money and toy clocks to help illustrate concepts. Science is also a hands-on subject in kindergarten. Students study weather, nature and physical sciences. Kindergarten students use the campus for many outdoor science projects. History comes alive with stories and hands-on projects. Kindergarten students study Colonial America and the founding fathers. Students are introduced to the Old and New Testament through story telling, using traditional Bible stories. Kindergarten students begin their foreign language learning with French. Students also have the opportunity to learn Spanish, Korean and Chinese in our after-school programs. Art and music are integrated throughout the curriculum in reading, mathematics, science, history and Bible. Students also meet with our music teacher and perform in our fall and spring music programs. Learning does not stop once the school day ends. Students have access to many enrichment activities that are all located on campus including Ballet, Chess Club, Spanish Club, Chinese Club, Korean Club, SNAG Golf, Soccer ABCs, Art and Drama Club. The Lower School enrolls students from kindergarten through fourth grade. These are the most formative years in a child’s life and the lower school takes pride in offering a mastery approach to learning. Children advance quickly in a safe, wholesome, joyful and nurturing environment with a friendly approach to structure and discipline. Lower school students learn to read with phonics, a systematic approach to the English language. Reading comprehension, spelling, grammar and writing are introduced in kindergarten. All lower school students study mathematics, history, science, physical education, art, music and French. Latin begins in third grade. Curriculum is age appropriate and children build skills in critical thinking, reasoning, research and communication. With strong academic, moral and social values, the Fairfax Christian School creates a foundation that will last a lifetime. Academy of Christian Education

At the Academy of Christian Education we strive to awaken a love of... learning, prepare students for the challenges of tomorrow, and develop integrity through rigorous academics and Biblical truth. The Academy of Christian Education (ACE) was established in 1996 to provide children an academically accelerated, but enjoyable education. The three founders of the school, Mrs. Donna Strater, Mrs. Judy Lee, and Mrs. Eva Russell, wanted to provide the best educational experience available in Northern Virginia. Through strong academics and a Biblical perspective, these women developed a curriculum that challenged students, provided structure, and created immersive learning experiences. After twenty years, the school continues to meet the needs of the students of today. Students facing the twenty-first century are presented with unique challenges and opportunities. ACE students use multiple learning methods to prepare for the future. Math programs offered through John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, Math and Reading programs designed to meet the specific academic needs of each student, and CoGAT preparation courses are just a few of the many ways ACE prepares students for future academic challenges. The Academy Summer Camp is developed to assist students in continuing their learning during the summer months. The playful learning environment combines games, activities, water play, field trips, and focused academic topics to help students keep their academic skills sharp during the summer months. The Academy of Christian Education has an open enrollment policy for students of all genders, ethnicities, religions, and cultural backgrounds. Younger students are placed in age appropriate classes, while students entering the Senior Kindergarten through Elementary are evaluated for class placement to assure academic success.

Children's House Montessori School

We dedicate ourselves to the joyful task of helping children develop... independence, self discipline, and respect for self, for others, and for the Earth. In partnership with parents, we strive to plant the seeds for a lifelong love of learning. Children's House Montessori School, CHMS, is located in a beautiful wooded setting in Reston, Virginia. We are a small, family-oriented school that offers half-day and full-day child care programs for children 3 years of age through kindergarten. We're not your typical daycare; we're a special place where your child will feel at home from the moment s/he steps in the door. If you're looking for a unique preschool experience, give us a call. Children's House is owned and directed by Keturah Collins, a certified Montessori teacher with more than 30 years experience. We are an American Montessori Society Full Affiliate School. The core curriculum of a Montessori classroom consists of practical life, sensorial, math and language. These areas of the classroom have activities for all ages, and lay the foundation for learning throughout the child's life. Practical Life Skills learned in this area of the classroom lay a foundation for the rest of the curriculum. We introduce socialization skills and the work cycle, and practice fine and gross motor skills. The lessons teach responsibility for oneself, others, and the environment. They encourage independence and promote the development of a sense of order. Some examples of these lessons are: spooning and pouring, scrubbing, polishing, sewing, food preparation, and grace and courtesy lessons. Sensorial These lessons sharpen the senses through comparing and contrasting activities, such as matching, grading, and sequencing objects. Together, these activities form the foundation for mathematical, musical and scientific studies. Examples in the Sensorial area are: matching sounds or smells, matching or grading colors, grading by size, and learning plane and solid shapes. Math Lessons in this area begin with the very concrete and move to the more abstract. A variety of objects are manipulated to learn basic number concepts; place value is learned through manipulating the golden beads. Some examples are: sandpaper numerals for learning the symbols 1–9, the spindle box for understanding the concept of 0, the teens board and tens board for matching quantity and symbol, and the golden beads for understanding the decimal system and performing mathematical operations. Language Our language materials are phonetically based and will help your child develop the skills needed for verbal communication, reading and writing. Examples in this area include games that provide opportunities for speaking, sandpaper letters for learning the sounds of the alphabet, the movable alphabet for constructing words and sentences, many opportunities for reading, and metal insets of design for perfecting the pencil grip.
