Oakland Mills Nursery School

Oakland Mills Nursery, Inc., (OMNS) was established in 1970, is a non-profit, cooperative nursery school. The mission of OMNS in partnership with... teachers and members, is to ensure a safe, fun, and educationally enriched environment that successfully introduces young children to school. OMNS welcomes a diverse community of members and celebrates cultural diversity in the classroom. We strive to create and maintain a supportive and nurturing environment for all families. OMNS Philosophy: The OMNS philosophy affirms the individual learning styles of each child. The spirit of play is present in all activities to promote the social, physical, intellectual and emotional development of the children. Our individually developed and MSDE approved curriculum is focused on kindergarten readiness through the discovery approach and learning through play philosophy. The OMNS curriculum provides thematically based developmentally appropriate activities to foster a love of learning and growth in all domains of learning. While the majority of the school day is devoted to child-directed exploration, it is balanced by structured small and large group activities. A wide variety of toys, games, books, music, and art supplies enhance the learning process; build thinking skills and stimulate a child’s imagination. All aspects of the OMNS program incorporate research based best practices, and are aligned with MSDE early childhood standards. We are committed to on-going program evaluation and improvement. Using yearly school-wide surveys and the MSDE accreditation self-evaluation instrument, we continuously strive to improve our program. (Accredited since December 2010) OMNS supports and requires on-going professional development for our teachers. A quality program depends on a high level of continued professional training. Teachers attend classes and conferences to improve their teaching skills and knowledge. OMNS promotes and builds relationships with families, community agencies and resources. By partnering with our broader community, we strengthen our program and better support our members.

Teaching, Learning and Caring Since 1994

The curriculum is a combination of MSDE Approved, The Creative Curriculum for Family Child Care along with INNOVATIONS; The Comprehensive Infant and... The Comprehensive Toddler Curriculum. Also The Learning Through Play; A Practical Guide for Teaching Young Children. Lesson plans for ages 2-5yr olds in the following areas: Language, Blocks, Problem Solving, Science, Art, Music & Movement, (Sand, Water, Clay & Wood), Cooking, Dramatic Play & Math are all implemented in the program. Although all of these elements are part of the program, Magda Gerber; RIE, has a strong influence in respectfully honoring the educational process here at Teaching, Learning, Caring. Teaching, Learning, Caring is a licensed family child care home with a center type of set up complete with an Infant Safety Play Zone. Family childcare allows more flexibility to serve each child's needs and interests. We follow and focus on the child's interest as well as having structured and planned experiences to learn from. This all takes place in a single family home with a fenced. Similar to what naturally takes place in a family; with a variety of age groups; one can learn important life skills and develop compassion and other life skills from each other as well. This is the best choice for your infant and child. Naturally! Laurie Alcock, Director/Owner and Educarer has been a licensed "Quality Child Care" provider since 1994. Teaching, Learning, Caring In Home Child Care

Teaching, Learning, Caring In Home Child Care uses MSDE approved The Creative Curriculum for Family Childcare from Teaching Strategies, Inc. along... with Innovations The Comprehensive Infant Curriculum and Innovations The Comprehensive Toddler Curriculum. Also a Learning Through Play Curriculum with lesson plans for ages 2 -5 years old in the following areas: Math, Dramatic Play, Cooking, Language, Sand, Water, Clay & Wood, Music & Movement, Art, Science, Problem Solving and Blocks. While all of these are integrated into the on going learning process, a strong influence from Magda Gerber and RIE is a core foundation based on respecting each child. "Respect is the basis of the RIE philosophy. Respecting a child means treating even the youngest infant as a unique human being, not as an object. This facility is set back inside a quiet cul-de-sac, in a single-family home. The back yard is fenced and has assorted outdoor play equipment designed for infants and older children. Picnic areas are available for the more outdoor time when the weather is appropriate. Within the home, there is a center type of set up with an Infant Safety Play Zone. The best of both worlds, being in a family home, not institutional, offering numerous options for the safety of your child and learning experiences to take place. Laurie Alcock, Educarer is a recipient of numerous awards for her program that has been serving the Howard County Community since 1994. Her awards were given for Health, Safety, and Nurturing. After getting numerous awards from the current and past Howard County Executives, Allen Kittleman, Ken Ulman and James Robey, Laurie Alcock was inducted into the Shining Stars for her ongoing dedication and commitment. She continues to serve as a trusted, quality family childcare provider and continues to be recognized and honored each year at these award ceremonies for her child care program. While Laurie Alcock, holds a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art, she is also Certified in Child Care. She continues her education with on going classes to keep current in the field. She has served on the board as VP of Mentoring/Networking for the local childcare association. She continues to be a resource and mentor for other providers informally. Prior experience includes: Art Instructor for Kindergarden in Baltimore City, Participant & Substitute in an educational research project, funded by Head Start in conjunction with the University of Maryland; MIND Project (Model for Integrated Neuronal Development) serving children ages 2, 3 & 4, Previous childcare provider for Pediatrician Dr.Barnaby Starr child, Adjunct Professor teaching art to the senior community. This is a unique opportunity to have your child(ren) as part of a small learning group, preparing them with life skills for future successes. While the environment is fantastic, "Miss Laurie" is the treasured part of what makes it so wonderful! License #43466
